Securing Base Cabinets When the Wall Doesn't Meet the Cabinet
Kitchen and built-in cabinets are installed square and level, but the walls around them may be anything but. Uneven drywall, out-of-plumb walls, alcoves and service space behind the cabinet can all leave a gap where a cabinet needs to be secured.

Why the Gap Matters
A cabinet may be perfectly square while the wall behind or beside it varies considerably. That means a spacer that fits one fixing point may be too short or too long at another.

Fixing a Base Cabinet Beside a Wall
A base cabinet positioned at the end of a run may sit close to an adjacent wall without actually touching it. The same situation can occur inside an alcove or wherever the wall runs slightly out of square.
Where the cabinet has a suitable structural fixing point, Space-Plug can be positioned between the cabinet and wall and adjusted to the required depth. An appropriate screw and wall fixing can then pass through the assembly to secure the cabinet.
This avoids having to produce a separate fixed spacer for every variation encountered during the installation.
One Cabinet, Different Gap Sizes
A wall that appears straight can still vary by several millimetres from one fixing position to another. The difference may be even greater in older properties or where drywall, framing or finishing work is not perfectly plumb.

How Does an Adjustable Cabinet Spacer Work?
Space-Plug is a purpose-designed adjustable spacer fixing manufactured from durable polypropylene. It bridges the space between suitable floor-standing cabinetry and the wall while also providing a route for the fixing screw.
Once adjusted to the required distance, the spacer forms a rigid bridge across the gap. The fixing screw then passes through the cabinet and Space-Plug into an appropriate fixing point in the wall.

Choose a Wall Fixing Suitable for the Installation
Space-Plug bridges the gap between the cabinet or furniture and the wall as part of the fixing system. The screw, plug, anchor or other fixing must be appropriate for the wall construction and the installation.
Space-Plug Adjustable Spacer Fixings are designed for suitable floor-standing cabinetry and furniture. They are not designed to support wall-mounted cabinets.
Can Space-Plug Be Used Behind a Base Cabinet?
Yes, where the construction of the cabinet and the installation provide an appropriate structural fixing point. Space-Plug can bridge a suitable gap between the rear of the cabinet and the wall in the same way that it can bridge a gap at the side.
The key considerations are the cabinet fixing point, the wall construction and the depth of the gap. The chosen Space-Plug must also fall within its stated adjustment range.
Is an Adjustable Spacer Always Necessary?
No. If a cabinet can be properly secured directly to the wall, there is no benefit in adding a spacer unnecessarily.
