Kitchen Installer Guide: Faster Cabinet Fixing

Faster, smarter kitchen cabinet installation

If you install kitchens for a living, you know how quickly small frustrations can eat into your day. Awkward fixing positions, uneven walls, service voids and fiddly brackets can all add unnecessary time to what should be a straightforward installation.

Space-Plug was invented by a former kitchen fitter to solve one of those frustrations: fixing kitchen base cabinets securely to the wall across the service void.

Instead of reaching behind a cabinet to position traditional angle brackets, Space-Plug Adjustable Spacer Fixings allow you to drill and fix directly through the cabinet while it is in position.

This guide explains how the system works, why professional kitchen installers use it and how it can make base cabinet installation faster, easier and more accurate.

Why fixing kitchen base cabinets can be frustrating

Traditional methods often use L brackets or angle brackets positioned behind the cabinet.

They work, but the service void behind a base unit can make them awkward to position and difficult to access. Depending on the installation, fitters may also need additional packing or shims to bridge the gap between the cabinet and the wall.

When you're fitting an entire run of cabinets, those extra steps add up.

Space-Plug approaches the problem differently. The fixing point can be selected through a suitable solid part of the cabinet, while the adjustable spacer bridges the void between the cabinet and the wall.

Meet the Space-Plug Adjustable Spacer Fixing

Space-Plug is an adjustable spacer designed specifically to bridge the gap between furniture and the wall while allowing a fixing screw to pass directly through its centre.

It means the cabinet can remain exactly where you've levelled and aligned it while you drill and fix.

Space-Plug was developed by founder Cliff Petit after experiencing the same frustrations while fitting kitchens himself. Rather than accepting the traditional angle bracket as the only option, he developed a purpose-designed adjustable fixing for the job.

Today, Space-Plug is used by professional kitchen fitters, carpenters, furniture installers and DIYers around the world.

Three sizes for different service voids

Space-Plug Adjustable Spacer Fixings are available in three sizes:

  • Mini: 15–35mm
  • Regular: 30–50mm
  • XL: 45–80mm

This gives installers an adjustable solution for service voids and other gaps from 15mm to 80mm.

How Space-Plug works

The principle is deliberately simple. Once the cabinet is correctly positioned and levelled, Space-Plug can be installed in four steps.

Drill straight through the kitchen cabinet towards the wall
Thread the fixing screw through the Space-Plug
Adjust Space-Plug to bridge the cabinet service void
Tighten the fixing to secure the kitchen cabinet to the wall
1. Drill Straight Through 2. Thread Your Screw & Locate 3. Unwind To Fit 4. Tighten Up!

Drill straight through a suitable solid part of the cabinet and into the wall. Install the appropriate wall plug, thread the screw through Space-Plug and position it behind the cabinet. Unwind the spacer until it bridges the void, then tighten the fixing.

The cabinet stays in position throughout the process, so there's no need to repeatedly move the unit backwards and forwards while establishing the fixing point.

Why kitchen installers use adjustable spacer fixings

They're Fast

Fix directly through the cabinet rather than positioning and accessing small brackets behind it. Across a full kitchen installation, removing unnecessary steps can save valuable fitting time.

They're Adjustable

Simply unwind Space-Plug until it bridges the gap between the cabinet and the wall. There's no need to manufacture a spacer to the exact depth of the service void.

They're Flexible

You're not restricted to the predetermined position of an angle bracket. A suitable fixing position can be selected along a solid cabinet cross-brace, helping you avoid services or align with an appropriate fixing point in the wall.

They're Accurate

The cabinet can be levelled and positioned first, then fixed exactly where it stands. That helps maintain the alignment you've already established across the cabinet run.

They're Easy

No specialist installation tools are required. Space-Plug works with standard drilling and fixing equipment, together with screws and wall plugs appropriate for the wall construction.

They're Professional

Space-Plug was designed specifically to solve the problem of bridging the gap between a cabinet and the wall while creating a direct fixing through the cabinet.

Fewer components for base cabinet fixing

A traditional angle bracket installation can involve multiple brackets, screws and wall plugs, together with additional packing where required.

Traditional tools and fixings used when installing kitchen base cabinets

With Space-Plug, the fixing itself is much simpler:

  • Space-Plug Adjustable Spacer Fixing
  • Suitable fixing screw
  • Suitable wall plug
  • Drill and appropriate drill bit

The exact screw, wall plug and fixing method must always be appropriate for the wall construction and installation.

Designed by a kitchen fitter, for kitchen fitters

The idea behind Space-Plug came directly from experience on site.

Founder Cliff Petit was fitting kitchens and became frustrated with the traditional method of securing base units across the service void. The result was a simple idea: instead of packing the gap and working behind the cabinet, why not create an adjustable spacer that could bridge the void while allowing the cabinet to be fixed directly through it?

That idea became the Space-Plug Adjustable Spacer Fixing.

It's a small component, but it changes the way one of the most repetitive jobs in a kitchen installation can be approached.

A smarter alternative to L brackets

Space-Plug isn't designed to replace every bracket used in a kitchen. Wall cabinets, joining applications and other parts of an installation have their own fixing requirements.

But for fixing floor-standing base cabinets back to the wall across a service void, installers now have an alternative to the traditional angle bracket.

Our guide to angle brackets for kitchen base cabinets explains the differences in more detail.
